How Britain got sued for stopping a coal mine

While energy bills spiral, public money could soon flow to an overseas fossil fuel company. Because a government dared to block a climate-wrecking coal mine.

The weapon being used? Corporate courts (aka ISDS) written into trade deals that give companies the power to sue governments over decisions that cut into their profits. Billions in public money has already been paid out by governments sued for policies protecting the environment, public health, or workers’ rights. It’s corporate privilege over democracy, and it has to stop.

Together with Friends of the Earth and Trade Justice Movement, we’ve created this short video to tell the story of the obscure trade rules that let fossil fuel firms challenge our climate victories, the elite interests behind them, and what’s at stake for our future.
